On July 27, 2024, Seek Foundation, in collaboration with the Environmental Foundation of India (EFI), organized a beach cleaning event at Besant Nagar Beach, Chennai. This significant initiative involved 150 students from class VII, aiming to raise awareness about marine pollution and foster community engagement in environmental conservation.
The primary goal was to address the issue of marine pollution and its impact on coastal ecosystems. The event focused on removing litter, raising awareness about the dangers of marine pollution, and encouraging local communities to take an active role in environmental conservation.
The day began with a briefing session where representatives from EFI and Seek Foundation outlined the event’s objectives and the environmental impact of beach litter. Participants were educated on waste segregation and disposal. Equipped with gloves and trash bags, students spread out across the beach, collecting various types of waste, including plastic bottles and food wrappers.
Interactive sessions informed participants about marine ecosystems, the effects of pollution on wildlife, and sustainable practices to prevent pollution. Participants collected data on the types and quantities of waste encountered, contributing to broader research on marine waste management. A debriefing session reflected on the day’s achievements and discussed ways to improve future initiatives. Participants shared their experiences and insights.
The event resulted in the removal of over 75 kg of waste, significantly improving the beach’s cleanliness. It successfully engaged 45 students and local community members, fostering a greater understanding of environmental issues. Workshops reached 45 participants, providing valuable knowledge on marine conservation and waste management.
Thanks to the combined efforts of EFI and Seek Foundation, the beach cleaning event at Besant Nagar Beach was a huge success. The program not only made the beach cleaner but also empowered participants to take action in their communities. We are grateful for the support and participation of the students, community members, and our dedicated staff, including Ms. Ananthi, Ms. Jaya, and Ms. Bhagiya.
Building on this success, EFI and Seek Foundation plan to organize more beach cleaning drives and environmental awareness programs. By continuing to engage and educate the public, these organizations aim to foster a culture of environmental responsibility and sustainability.
